Hey there, Beta Buddies!
Every university semester always comes with its own troubles, right? Be it a particular course, lecturer, or absurd expenses, there is no such thing as a perfect semester. However, among the many unruly semesters one can have at UNILAG, this one seems to be particularly fast-paced. With an extended break, hostel uncertainties, and looming exams, this semester demands strategic planning. While this may seem overwhelming at first glance, the Beta Sheet is at your service to recommend tips that will certainly help you overcome this semester.
Time Management Strategies For A Successful Semester
If one of the hallmarks of this semester is its unnatural fast pace, then utilising the limited time you have is key to overcoming it. While this is not to say you should not participate in taking breaks and having relaxing outings, you have to prioritise what you consider most important, whether it be your books or even your career. To successfully manage your time, you’ll have to set clear goals while creating a schedule. Following a schedule is much harder than creating one; however, even if you don’t follow it, it can be used as a guide when you feel lost and overwhelmed.
Balancing Work And Studies
If by any chance you’re a student-preneur or work a job, know that many others feel your pain and share your difficulties. Feel free to reach out to any student-preneur for help and advice on how to balance the two. Depending on what you do and your priority, your career or academics may take over the other while you feel completely overwhelmed. At times like this, continuing to push through headstrong may not be the best course of action. Taking a break and looking at your goals and what you have to do will help you organize your thoughts and the way to push ahead will come to you.
Stress Management Techniques In A Hectic Academic Environment
As UNILAG and stress are basically the same word, learning how to manage stress will be key to maintaining your physical and mental health. While it could feel like the world is collapsing at times, learn to take breaks. Oftentimes, you’ll come back from your break more refreshed and with more energy to hack away your goals. When stressed, definitely don’t neglect your sleep as UNILAG would bring nights when sleeping would not be an option. If you can afford to sleep, then do so wholeheartedly. And if you can’t afford to sleep, make sure to connect with like-minded friends as you limit your caffeine intake while creating time to sleep after you complete your herculean task.
Utilizing University Resources
If UNILAG is going to stress you, you might as well use whatever resources it offers to the best of your ability. Whether it be the library, the LT’s, or the WI-FI in various places around school, using them for your studies can be highly beneficial as we all know our beds are way too tempting and comfy. If you have any issues with any of your courses, your course adviser is there to well…..advise. However, if not your course adviser, then those in higher levels, particularly the excos are your go to.
Creating A Supportive Network: Building Relationships For Success
Having good and healthy relationships will go a long way in doing whatever you want to do. As this semester is immensely fast-paced, covering both the syllabus and past questions for each and every one of your courses alone will be a herculean task. To ease the burden, you and a friend can get together, read different topics or courses, and then explain them to the other person. This will help speed the assimilation process for you or your friend when either of you decides to read the topic or course. Moreover, your friend will keep you accountable as you both work toward smashing your goals.
All in all, while this semester will certainly throw its own set of challenges at you, we the Beta Sheet team are here to help you navigate the storm. To overcome the storm, you’ll need to regularly review and adjust yourself and your plans based on your circumstances (and the ones that UNILAG decides to throw at you). If you do this and remain committed, then even if you deviate from the course, you’ll find your way back and win.

Student Entrepreneur of the Week: Aisha Morenike Ayinde
Bimonthly, we shine a spotlight on one outstanding student entrepreneur who is making waves in the world of business.
Nisha Culture has achieved remarkable milestones, winning grants and delivering over 10,000 products worldwide since 2018. Aisha's commitment extends beyond sales, with NISHA CULTURE now playing a pivotal role in helping others start their own brands, supplying products, and even producing souvenirs for various companies.
Please introduce yourself and your business
My name is Aisha, and I own a brand that produces bags for young students (Gen Zs) and the working class.
What inspired you to become a student entrepreneur, and how did you get started?
Well, I used to make footwear before, I went for vocational training so I learned shoes and leather, but when I came to Unilag I realised that people didn't have the perfect bags for their books and stuff, so I started doing research and I found tote bags and started producing them!
Brag about your business
So I've won several grants and awards, and I've also had my business put on a billboard which was actually a sponsorship btw🤭, and we have delivered over 10k products since 2018 and we've sent a package to every state inside Nigeria and abroad as well.
Could you tell us about a significant milestone or achievement that you've reached with your brand?
My brand has moved from just selling units to helping people start their brands to teaching people, supplying products to people, to producing souvenirs in large quantities for different companies
What valuable lessons have you learned from your business experiences, and how have they influenced your personal and professional growth.
My business has actually taught me a lot about PATIENCE with customers. Normally I don't like to socialise but my brand has forced me to make friends, smile and connect with people and it has helped me a whole lot to build my brand
Are there any specific mentors or role models in your life who have inspired you to pursue both academics and entrepreneurship? If so, how have they influenced your path?
no specific ones but I take a good number of classes on sales and marketing from several coaches
Have you collaborated with other students or professionals, and how has collaboration contributed to the success of your business?
Yes, I've collaborated with students, professionals and a lot of other people. Collaboration is one of my top business strategies, and it helps me to penetrate new audiences, so I think that's basically the essence of collaborating with other people.
Convocation day is fast approaching, what are your future plans for your business, and how do you envision balancing your ambitions with your career goals after graduation?
So by God's grace, I'm hoping to really expand my brand, opening a workspace where I can empower other people, teach skills and also provide job opportunities for other youths like myself. I'm looking to open a walk-in store where customers can come in and shop with ease instead of waiting for 5 working days like we normally do.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of academics and your entrepreneurial pursuits, and how do you find time for them?
Aside from academic pursuits I actually work hard as a lifestyle content creator. I make videos a lot and what I do when I want to relax is to create memories. I also work as a digital marketer and a content strategist. So these are the things I do apart from school and my business
What would you say is the most difficult part about building a brand?
Apart from building, for a production brand, the most difficult part is getting quality materials, and having to switch from one material to the other. Also, having to deal with students requires a lot of patience because it can be overwhelming
What advice would you give an up-and-coming student?
Do not keep yourself in your shell, collaborate, meet people, expand your network, talk to people, attend programs and introduce yourself well. Connection is the most important thing!
If you describe NISHA in 3 words, what would they be?
In three words, it would have to be funny, hardworking, and resourceful
Promote your business in 3 sentences
NISHA CULTURE is a brand that provides comfort for Gen Zs, students and working-class youths as well through our unique quality products. We aspire for comfort for all our customers. We have sold over 10,000 products since 2018 worldwide and we are still looking to expand
